A standard straight UV lamp emits light in one direction along a single path. A U-shaped lamp bends the tube back on itself, so the same physical length holds two parallel paths of UV output. A U-shaped lamp fits the same amount of UV-emitting surface into roughly half the linear space of a straight lamp. In a compact air duct or water chamber, this means higher UV dose without extending the housing. The lamp delivers nearly twice the radiant output of a straight tube of the same overall length, or maintains the same output while shortening the total installation footprint.
Uniform Dose Across the Chamber
The two parallel arms of the U-shape create a broader field of UV light. Air or water passing through the chamber receives UV exposure from two sides rather than one. This reduces dead zones where flow might escape sufficient irradiation, improving overall treatment consistency.
253.7 nm for Germicidal Action
The primary wavelength emitted by a low-pressure mercury lamp is 253.7 nm. This UV-C light penetrates the cell walls of bacteria, viruses, and mold spores, disrupting their DNA and preventing reproduction. The organism either dies or loses its ability to multiply. This is the core disinfection mechanism.
185 nm for Ozone Generation
The same discharge also produces a secondary wavelength at 185 nm. This shorter UV light reacts with oxygen in the air to form ozone. Ozone is a gas that spreads through the chamber and into crevices, cracks, and shadowed areas where UV light cannot reach. It oxidizes odor-causing compounds and adds a secondary layer of microbial inactivation.
Working Together
The 253.7 nm light handles surface and line-of-sight disinfection. The 185 nm light generates ozone that handles the spaces in between. Neither wavelength alone covers every surface. Together, they address both the direct and indirect treatment needs of air and water systems.
Line-of-Sight Limits of UV Light
UV light travels in straight lines. It cannot bend around corners, penetrate opaque materials, or reach into deep crevices. Any surface not directly exposed to the lamp remains untreated. In air ducts, water tanks, and complex equipment, many surfaces fall outside the direct UV path.
Ozone as a Supplementary Agent
Ozone is a gas, so it diffuses through the entire volume of the chamber. It contacts surfaces that UV light misses and oxidizes organic matter, including odor molecules and microbial films. For applications where complete coverage matters, the combination of UV and ozone provides more thorough treatment than UV alone.
Controlled Ozone Production
Not every application needs ozone. Some environments cannot tolerate it due to occupant exposure or material compatibility. A Hot Spot Unique to U-Shape
The bend where the two arms of the lamp meet receives heat from both sides. This area runs hotter than the straight sections of the tube. Without proper cooling, the excess heat shortens lamp life and reduces UV output stability.
Targeted Cooling Design
Some U-shaped lamp systems direct cooling water or air at the bend first, rather than distributing cooling evenly along the tube. This prioritizes the hottest point and keeps the entire lamp within its optimal operating temperature range. The result is more consistent UV output and longer service life compared to lamps that treat all sections equally.
